The ritual and sociability of Neapolitan coffee culture
In Naples and Italy, coffee is much more than just a drink. It’s a real cult
"The ritual and sociability of Neapolitan coffee culture" is one of the intangible assets registered with the INPAI Inventory in the Ministry of Agricultural Policies. It also required the entry in the register of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (IPIC) of the Campania Region, the first step to initiate the procedure to be recognised as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. In recent weeks the Campania Region has started a process of collaboration with the “Consortium for the Safeguard of Traditional Italian Espresso Coffee” for the proposal of this unique candidacy.
In Naples and Italy, coffee is much more than just a drink. It’s a real cult, a tradition known all over the world that inspires values of conviviality, sociality and art. The Neapolitan ritual has given life to traditions spread everywhere: Caffè sospeso (suspended coffe) and Caffè in ginocchio (coffee on the knees) evoke a sense of solidarity and altruism; or the "consuolo", coffee is used as an offering to give condolences to a family in mourning.
All the values that make the ritual of Neapolitan coffee unique have been described in a video, as part of the application dossier, made by the Campania Region in collaboration with Film Commission Regione Campania and Scabec.
